As part of the European Union Delegation to Myanmar’s public diplomacy activities managed by Altair, the team organised the Pre-Thingyan event — a Myanmar Gastronomic and Cultural Week held in Brussels from 28 February to 4 March 2026. The event brought together more than 600 participants and conveyed the spirit of Thingyan — the Burmese New Year — to the heart of Europe.
Over five days, the programme combined a public market featuring gastronomy and handicrafts, with dishes prepared by chefs and students from the Myanmar diaspora, live cooking demonstrations, traditional yein dance performances open to the public, and a series of Tea Talks — informal conversations over tea inspired by the culture of Burmese tea houses — fostering genuine dialogue between EU representatives, civil society, and the Myanmar community. The week culminated in a flagship event featuring artistic performances, video screenings, and personal testimonies.
The event was a reflection of the EU’s enduring commitment to the people of Myanmar, using gastronomy, culture, and shared stories to raise awareness of the country’s humanitarian situation and to reaffirm European solidarity at a critical moment.
